Page 1 of 4 Who I Am and Why I Train The Way I Do
Apples & Oranges:
Let's get one thing straight: I don't LOVE the gym. This guy LOVES the gym:

And that's cool; I respect that. It takes a certain individual to love moving heavy iron around all day long, over and over again. Branch Warren (pictured above) has an extraordinary level of dedication and discipline, which is required for someone in his level of sport. So, Branch Warren has muscles; he's strong and he's ripped. But does that mean he's fit?
You see, I LOVE fitness. And with fitness comes a whole different ball game: diet, knowledge, exercise (on multiple planes), and even the ability to teach and help others. If you look at our Nutrition page, you will see that diet outweighs everything else. Knowledge is just as important as exercise. Consider your mind a muscle (even though it really consists of fat and nervous tissue). For the sake of argument though, treat your brains as you would a muscle, and like any other muscle you'd work in the gym, you have to exercise your mind too. Instruction is also important because teaching others teaches yourself.
Let's assume Branch has these characteristics though: He obviously follows a strict diet (whether it's the best one or not remains to be seen) He obviously knows what he's doing in the gym and I'm sure he would know how to train someone (to a respectable extent)
Let's move onto exercise (on multiple planes)... As previously stated: Branch Warren has muscles; he's strong and he's ripped. But does that make him fit?
Could Branch Warren run a respectable 5K? Could Branch Warren even run a 5K? Could Branch do a handstand? Climb a rope? Perform a muscle-up? Its obvious that he's strong but how is his balance, agility, accuracy, flexibility, coordination?
You see, for fitness, there are far more components than just being big and ripped. CrossFit recognizes 10 Physical Skills that define fitness. They are:
1. Cardiovascular/respiratory endurance- The ability of body systems to gather, process, and deliver oxygen. 2. Stamina - The ability of body systems to process, deliver, store, and utilize energy. 3. Strength - The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force. 4. Flexibility - The ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint. 5. Power - The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply maximum force in minimum time. 6. Speed - The ability to minimize the time cycle of a repeated movement. 7. Coordination - The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a singular distinct movement. 8. Agility - The ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another. 9. Balance - The ability to control the placement of the body's center of gravity in relation to its support base. 10. Accuracy - The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.
And that's what I love: The total package.
